In the U.S. 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Although the probability that you will be that 1 appears low, the risk is certainly there! This is why Self Breast Exams (SBE) are so important. Women should be checking their breast every day in the shower as while washing. This way we are familiar with our breasts and know when something is different. Breast tissue is glandular and there are continuous fibrocystic changes of the breast, this is why you need to be familiar with yours and learn what is normal for you. The majority of breast cancer occurs in women over 50 and most malignant masses are found in the upper outer portion of the breast, near the arm pit (but there are always exceptions). Breast cancer will feel like a hard, bumpy rock under the skin that you can’t move. If what you feel is movable, smooth, & rubbery it is most likely a cyst or fibroadenoma and not cancerous. You should be getting clinical breast exams (CBE) every year by your health care provider at your annual exam. Yearly mammograms begin at age 40. Take ownership of your bodies ladies and check those tatas !! They belong to you!
